In Malta, employees are entitled to Vacation Leave and several special leave types. These include a wide range of circumstances, such as maternity leave, IVF leave, and bereavement leave, amongst others.
Although there is a general minimum amount of leave entitlement for each leave type, specific industries have differing amounts of leave, according to their Wage Regulation Orders (WRO).
Vacation Leave
Employees are entitled to a minimum of 192 hours of Vacation Leave per year plus any Public Holiday falling on a non-scheduled day of work. This value is calculated automatically by Buddy according to the Salary Settings inserted. Vacation Leave Entitlement for Full-Time and Fixed-Hour Employees.
Sick Leave
Employees on sick leave are entitled to additional days of paid or half-paid sick leave, over and above any vacation leave. A full-time employee is generally entitled to 10 days of paid sick leave per year. However, this varies according to the industry in which they work.
More information on specifics can be checked in our Detailed Sick & Special Leave Article; or in the Work Regulation Orders directly.
Unpaid Leave
Unpaid leave can be used when the employee wants time off but does not qualify for vacation leave or any other type of leave.
When utilising unpaid leave, Buddy will process these hours at €0 rate per hour. Do note that, for long periods of unpaid leave, users have to manually update and remove SSC weeks from the 'weeks worked' section during the Run Payroll Process.
In some instances, companies may choose to continue and pay SSC to ensure the employee continues to have access to social security benefits.
