What are the Sickness Benefit and the Injury Benefit?

What are these Benefits?

Sickness Benefit

The Sickness Benefit is a benefit paid by the Department of Social Security to employees for periods of illness. The employer is due to pay the employee the amount of entitled sick, less any amount receivable through the benefits. Therefore, the sickness benefit assists employers in reducing the cost of an employee being on sick leave for a prolonged period.

Injury Benefit

The injury benefit is a similar benefit paid to employees who have work-related injuries that persist for more than 3 days after the injury. For more information on what are the requirements and procedures for application, see: Department of Social Security (Injury Benefit).

Calculation of the Benefits

Sickness Benefit Calculation

Generally, this benefit is payable for each day from the fourth consecutive day of sickness. That means if someone has used 5 consecutive days of sick leave, they would be entitled to 2 days of sickness benefit, at either the Single or Married rate.

For anyone with an applicable sickness benefit, Buddy will automatically apply the Sickness Benefit to their payslip based on the sick leave application.

Injury Benefit Calculation

Generally, this benefit is payable for each day from the fourth consecutive day of injury leave. The date of injury is not included in these days and hence the employer has to pay in full the day of injury and the following three days of injury leave.
